After reading this fine article by Jack Marx on temperance, I stumbled across this nonsense (courtesy of Slashdot) suggesting that “addictive technology” – such as Blackberries – come with health warnings!
Let’s hope the Fun Sheriff doesn’t catch on.
Jack Marx is great. Check this from another post:
There have been disturbing reports of doctors refusing to operate on patients who insist on partaking in the joys of the cigarette, the logic being that the privilege of surgery is wasted on those who won’t keep themselves nice. I believe the medical community’s heart is in the right place – they want a healthier, happier human race, and bravo for that – but I think they should at least be consistent. For example, mountaineers who plan to continue their adventures should be denied treatment for frostbite, while women who insist on falling in love with arseholes who break their hearts should be deprived of anti-depressants and all degrees of bypass surgery. One would expect the less noble industries to eventually follow the medical lead, with supermarkets refusing to sell tissues to those who can’t prove that they’ve been wearing their cardigans, or who won’t promise to stop watching syrupy movies. Ultimately, the human race would become so disciplined and responsible that we wouldn’t be able to discern between doctors and your average self-important moron, and just imagine a world like that.

This is crap, doctors don’t want to operate on smokers because there are so many potential complications, from clots to anesthesia issues to infections.

On the hypocrisy of anti-pot laws.
In this post (http://blogs.news.com.au/jackmarxlive/index.php/news/comments/the_lust_epidemic/) he talked about individual responsibility with reference to sexual violence against women. I posted a comment about the stupidity of gun laws and suggested women be allowed to carry concealed weapons. His comment was quite favorable.
