Friedman Conference 2014

An invitation to the biggest libertarian event of 2014
John Humphreys

The ALS Friedman Conference is coming back to Sydney on 3/4 May 2014, and once again it promises to be the single biggest gathering of the good and the great from Australia’s liberty movement. Come and join us for a fun-filled weekend of learning, friendship and the inevitable debate that comes from putting more than one libertarian in a room at the same time.

936637_10201148653464164_1529967870_nThis year we will begin a tradition of announcing the winners of the Liberty Awards at the gala dinner event, which will be headlined by the brilliant and inspiring “Freedom Commissioner” Tim Wilson. If you would like to make a nomination for any of the categories (Libertarian of the Year; Young Libertarian of the Year; Libertarian Activist; Lifetime Achievement) then please contact me soon, as time is running out. My e-mail address is at the bottom of this invitation.
We are very pleased to announce three international guest speakers, including Dr Pat Michaels from the Cato Institute in the US, award-winning author and “skeptic lawyer” Helen Dale from the UK, and the recent winner of the IWMF Courage in Journalism Award — Phorn Bopha from Cambodia.

I met Bopha last year and heard the story of how she narrowly escaped with her life when her vehicle came under heavy fire, while she was attempting to expose government corruption. Despite that experience (and numerous death threats) she continues to work as an editor-at-large for the Cambodia Daily. I hope you too will be inspired by her integrity and bravery.

In addition to our international guests, we have some of the best minds from Australia, including our three most high profile free-market economists in Professors Sinclair Davidson, Judith Sloan and Henry Ergas. If those three agree they are unstoppable, and if they disagree then there will be fireworks; either way it is not to be missed.

We are also proud to have Senator-elect David Leyonhjelm speaking at the conference. The 2013 federal election was the first time in Australia’s history that somebody has been elected to parliament standing for a libertarian party; and even more exciting is the fact that David will have shared balance of power in the Senate when his term begins in July.

We are delighted that some of our most popular speakers from last year have returned, including Dr Ben O’Neill, Cass Wilkinson, Prof Jason Potts, Dr Jeremy Shearmur, Dr Peter Phelps, the Hon Dr Gary Johns, and Mark Hornshaw. They will be joined by many more exciting intellectuals and activists including Dr William Coleman, Dr Julie Novak, Kerryn Pholi, Dr Liam Tjia, Jenny Lindsay, Trisha Jha, Dr Peter Rohde, Leonie Phillips, and many more. For the list of announced speakers and their details, check out the conference details or the facebook event… and watch out for updates because more speakers are being announced every week.

The conference will be on the weekend of 3/4 May at UTS Sydney (Haymarket Campus). There will also be a Friday night event held in conjunction with Sydney Liberty on the Rocks and part of the international North Korean Freedom Week, where we will be raising money to help rescue people fleeing the world’s worst socialist hellhole. The gala dinner with Tim Wilson will be on Saturday night, and includes a three course meal and an open bar.

The package price for all of this is a bargain at $250 for adults and $200 for students. We have a limited number of partial scholarships available for those needing to pinch pennies; contact me if you want to apply. You can choose to just buy a single day pass, but given all the excitement and intellectual firepower on offer, I hope you can join us for the entire conference. We are also offering a premium package for the most dedicated supporters of liberty. For $500 you receive:

  • VIP pre-dinner drinks with speakers
  • VIP seating at conference and dinner
  • A signed publication
  • Our eternal thanks and goodwill

The Friedman conference is hosted by the Australian Libertarian Society (ALS), with support from the Australian Taxpayers Alliance and the Institute for Public Affairs. While not an official sponsor, the Centre for Independent Studies also deserve special thanks this year for lending us so many of their excellent researchers. The ALS does not have an income stream and we aren’t paid to host this conference, so we rely on ticket sales and generosity of our speakers and organizers to be able to bring this together. Thank you all.
Last year’s event was a great success and things are only going to get better. I am looking forward to the fun, friendship and feisty debates, and I hope to see you there.

John Humphreys
